RARE Vintage 1960s Undersea Shadowbox Compact – Real Seahorse and Seashells, Threaded Sea Flora, Gold Tone Vanity Case
A truly unusual mid-century piece that blurs the line between vanity object and miniature art.
This vintage 1940s powder compact features a delicately preserved real seahorse, suspended within a soft, milky lucite panel alongside fine sea flora arranged in an underwater scene. The surrounding elements—thread-like coral in soft red and green tones, scattered sand, and tiny shell fragments—create the effect of a sealed ocean vignette, almost like a tiny preserved world.
Encased in a gold-tone frame, the front reads more like a shadowbox than a traditional compact, making it especially striking both as a collectible and as display decor. Pieces like this were often sold as coastal souvenirs in the mid-20th century, but finding one this intact—with the seahorse still beautifully preserved—is increasingly rare.
The interior opens to a mirror and powder compartment, allowing it to be used traditionally or repurposed to hold your own pressed powder.
